Current statistics suggest we’re down around 22,000 drivers based on today’s figures. Of those 304,000 HGV Drivers, around 45,000 came from the EU, that number has dropped significantly and now sits at around 28,000-30,000 -a huge 15,000 loss.
Prior to the pandemic, there was around 30,000 new test passes a year. 30,000 is a lot of new drivers, however research suggests that around 20,000 either don’t start or leave the driver pool and around 10,000 (from the total driver pool) retire. Result, no growth.
The 22,000 shortfall could be 100,000 by the end of 2021.
