Happy Campeys: New DAF Generation XG fleet finds favour

Campeys of Selby has taken delivery of seven New Generation DAF XG 450 tractor units featuring DAF’s ‘FTG’ 6×2 mid-lift axle configuration, with a further 12 units scheduled for delivery before Christmas.

An even greater DAF presence is expected in the well-known North Yorkshire fleet in 2023. Vehicles are being supplied by DAF Dealer, Ford & Slater, with aftersales support fulfilled by Pelican DAF in Normanton with whom Campeys is forming a strong partnership.

The company reports an impressive average fuel economy return of over 11.0mpg from the 450bhp vehicles, despite the XG fleet only having entered service in mid-October. Transport Manager, Harry Campey, expects fuel economy to improve still further.

“We’re really impressed with the DAF XG’s economy,” he said, “11.0mpg straight out of the box is excellent for our operation, and that’s only going to get better once they’re bedded in. The new XG is a big step forward for DAF and the truck is more in line with the type of vehicle we want on our fleet,” said Harry.

The next batch of New Generation DAF XG tractors will be equipped with DAF’s Digital Vision System to replace traditional rear-view mirrors and to greatly enhance indirect (and direct) view around the cab and trailer. “DAF’s new camera system is a superb feature,” said Harry, “and it will be new to the fleet. The Corner View feature will definitely help with safety. The drivers love the on-board tech,” he added, “and they’re all fighting to get into the new DAF XG. Lead-times have been excellent,” he said, “and we’re delighted with the overall package. That’s why we want more – there’ll be over 30 New Generation DAF XG tractors with us by the end of next year.”

Campeys of Selby is a fourth-generation haulier. Expansion has been rapid, with the fleet growing from 40 to 110 trucks (and 200 trailers) in just five years. Supplementing a general haulage business model is Campeys specialist glass distribution work. The company is also a member of the Palletforce pallet network and operates throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
